01 Oklahoma City & Central Oklahoma

The Oklahoma City metro, including Edmond, Norman, Moore and surrounding communities, supports commercial, industrial, distribution, aerospace and service-sector development. Metal building applications in the area include warehouses, distribution facilities, manufacturing, aircraft hangars, commercial facilities, contractor buildings, automotive facilities, self-storage and flex space.

Projects along the I-35 and I-40 corridors can require facilities designed around loading, circulation, clear height and adaptable interior space. Commercial buyers may also combine office, warehouse, retail or service functions within one building.

02 Tulsa & Northeast Oklahoma

Tulsa combines manufacturing, aerospace, energy, distribution and industrial activity with access to major highway, rail and inland-waterway infrastructure. Metal building applications can include manufacturing facilities, industrial buildings, warehouses, aviation facilities, equipment storage, small-bay industrial, commercial buildings and flex developments.

The Tulsa region also benefits from the nearby Port of Catoosa and Oklahoma’s inland-waterway network, reinforcing the area’s logistics and industrial base.

03 Western Oklahoma & the Panhandle

Agriculture, livestock, energy and equipment storage play a larger role across western Oklahoma and the Panhandle. Metal buildings can provide adaptable space for farm equipment, hay storage, machinery, livestock operations, maintenance, agricultural processing, contractor operations and oilfield or energy equipment.

Open terrain can also influence structural exposure conditions, making actual project-location data important during engineering.

04 Eastern & Southeast Oklahoma

Eastern Oklahoma combines agriculture, poultry, forestry, manufacturing and recreational markets. Applications can include agricultural buildings, equipment storage, commercial buildings, workshops, warehouses, recreational buildings and boat or RV storage.

Building use, ventilation, insulation and site conditions should be considered together when configuring the building package.

Metal Buildings Engineered for Oklahoma Conditions

Oklahoma’s severe-weather environment makes structural design an important part of any metal building project, but that does not mean every building receives the same “Tornado Alley” specification. Metal buildings are engineered around the structural criteria established for the specific project.

Depending on the location and building use, the design may account for design wind speed, exposure category, building risk category, building height and geometry, roof uplift, component and cladding pressures, snow load, seismic criteria, roof and collateral loads, large framed openings, building use and occupancy, and local code requirements.

SteelCo coordinates PEMB engineering with trusted manufacturing and engineering partners so the building package reflects the project-specific criteria established for the Oklahoma site. A warehouse, agricultural building and essential facility can have very different structural requirements even when they are located in the same county.

Wind, Severe Weather & Tornado Design in Oklahoma

Oklahoma buyers understandably ask how metal buildings are designed for severe weather. An important distinction is that a building engineered for Oklahoma wind requirements is not automatically a tornado shelter or tornado-proof building.

Modern building codes establish structural wind requirements based on location, building characteristics and risk category. The 2024 International Building Code and referenced ASCE 7-22 structural standard also introduce tornado-load provisions for certain higher-risk buildings and facilities. Those provisions do not mean every warehouse, barn, garage or commercial building is engineered to withstand a direct tornado strike.

For most metal-building projects, engineering can consider basic design wind speed, exposure to open terrain, roof uplift pressures, wall pressures, connections, bracing, framed openings, building dimensions and risk category. Where tornado-specific design provisions apply, the project’s engineer and authority having jurisdiction determine the applicable requirements.

If a project needs an actual storm shelter or safe room, that is a separate design consideration and should be identified at the beginning of the project.

Planning a Tennessee Metal Building

A useful metal building quote begins with useful project information. Before requesting pricing, it helps to know:

  • Tennessee project city, county, or ZIP code

  • Intended building use

  • Approximate width and length

  • Required eave or clear height

  • Clear-span requirements

  • Door sizes and locations

  • Loading-dock requirements

  • Roof and wall preferences

  • Insulation needs

  • Desired timeline

  • Current site or land status

  • Whether plans already exist

  • Whether you already have a contractor

  • Whether you need materials only, erection resources, or complete construction services

You do not need every decision finalized before contacting SteelCo. Identifying the information still needed is part of the planning process.

Oklahoma Building Codes, Plan Review & Permitting

As of September 14, 2026, Oklahoma’s statewide minimum commercial building code is based on the 2024 International Building Code with Oklahoma amendments. The Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission establishes minimum statewide codes, while local jurisdictions generally interpret and enforce those requirements.

In unincorporated portions of the state, commercial building-code enforcement can involve the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal. An Oklahoma metal building project should therefore be coordinated with the authority having jurisdiction for the actual site rather than assuming Oklahoma City, Tulsa and a rural county follow identical plan-review procedures.

For typical SteelCo materials-only projects, the owner, contractor or project design team handles local permitting and approvals. SteelCo provides the engineering documentation associated with the PEMB package.

Insulation & Condensation Control for Oklahoma Metal Buildings

Oklahoma’s climate makes the building envelope an important part of planning. A warehouse, conditioned commercial building, livestock structure and equipment shed do not need identical insulation systems.

Depending on the building’s use, owners may need to evaluate insulation R-value, vapor retarders, condensation control, roof and wall insulation, liner systems, ventilation, air sealing, thermal bridging and interior temperature requirements. The appropriate system should be matched to how the building will actually be used rather than selected from a generic package list.

A conditioned office/warehouse facility, for example, has different envelope requirements than an unconditioned hay or equipment building. Agricultural and livestock buildings may also require careful consideration of ventilation and condensation control.

Designing an Oklahoma Metal Building for Future Expansion

Many commercial, industrial and agricultural buyers expect their space requirements to change. PEMB systems can often be planned with future expansion in mind.

Building orientation, expansion direction, endwall design, site layout, truck circulation, utility locations, drainage, future doors and additional bays can all affect how a building is positioned for later growth. If you expect to add warehouse bays, equipment storage or another phase later, that should be discussed during initial planning.

Planning for future expansion before fabrication generally creates more options than adapting a building that was never intended to grow.

In 2022 we purchased a red iron 30’ x 50‘ building from SteelCo Buildings. We worked with Clint to procure the contract and package cost. He was great to work with and had answers to all of our questions pertaining to additional features and recommendations. His information was useful in maintaining our cost allowances. Following the purchase of the building, we worked more closely with Brad on the changes we had decided on after the purchase. Brad worked very closely with us on cost changes. He was instrumental in working closely with the manufacturer to expedite the building changes without impacting outside peripheral cost changes. Clint was very helpful in securing contractors to perform various subcontract activities such as concrete foundation and building erection. We are very happy with the building and feel we got our moneys worth and appreciate the efforts from both Clint and Brad on achieving our goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oklahoma Metal Buildings

01

What building code applies to metal buildings in Oklahoma?

As of September 14, 2026, Oklahoma’s statewide minimum commercial building code is based on the 2024 International Building Code with Oklahoma amendments. The Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission establishes minimum statewide codes, with enforcement and interpretation handled by applicable local or state authorities.

Always confirm the requirements for the specific project with the authority having jurisdiction before final engineering and permitting.

02

Are Oklahoma metal buildings designed for tornadoes?

Not every Oklahoma metal building is designed as a tornado-resistant structure or storm shelter. Ordinary buildings are engineered for the wind and other structural requirements applicable to the project.

Under newer structural standards referenced by modern building codes, tornado-specific provisions can apply to certain higher-risk building categories. Projects requiring tornado shelters, safe rooms or other enhanced protection should identify those requirements separately during planning.

03

Does SteelCo pull my Oklahoma building permit?

For a typical Oklahoma SteelCo project, the owner, contractor or project team handles permitting and local approvals. SteelCo provides the engineered documentation associated with the PEMB package and can provide guidance relevant to the building-system portion of the permit process.

04

Does SteelCo provide stamped engineering drawings?

SteelCo metal building packages include engineered building documentation appropriate to the quoted package and project location. Stamped drawings, anchor-bolt information and foundation-plan options are available depending on the project and scope.

Site-specific civil, geotechnical and other engineering disciplines may require separate professionals.

05

Are metal buildings engineered differently in different parts of Tennessee?

They can be. Project location can affect wind, snow, seismic, exposure, and other structural criteria. Building use, dimensions, occupancy, and site conditions can also influence engineering.

SteelCo coordinates the metal building package around the criteria established for the actual project rather than assuming one design works statewide.

06

Do I need a permit for a rural Oklahoma metal building?

Permit and review requirements depend on the property’s jurisdiction and building use. Oklahoma establishes statewide minimum building codes, while municipalities and other authorities administer or enforce requirements in their jurisdictions. Commercial code enforcement in unincorporated areas can involve the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal.

The applicable authority should therefore be confirmed before assuming a rural project is exempt from review.

07

Can SteelCo provide full construction services in Oklahoma?

SteelCo Buildings supplies custom PEMB materials nationwide, including Oklahoma. SteelCo can provide the building package and help connect customers with erection resources where available, but SCB Construction Group’s current commercial GC footprint is Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama.

Oklahoma customers should generally plan to use their own local contractor for the broader construction scope.

08

Can I buy only an Oklahoma metal building kit?

Yes. Customers with their own contractor or erection crew can purchase a custom SteelCo metal building package. The package is configured around the project’s location, dimensions, use and selected options rather than relying on a generic stock design.

09

How much does a metal building cost in Oklahoma?

There is no single reliable Oklahoma metal-building price per square foot. Important cost factors include building dimensions, height, clear-span requirements, project location, structural loads, roof and wall systems, insulation, doors and framed openings, accessories, engineering requirements, freight, erection and the overall construction scope.

Two quotes should only be compared after confirming that both include similar materials, engineering and accessories.

10

How long does it take to get a metal building in Oklahoma?

Timing depends on factors such as building size, complexity, engineering, drawing approvals, manufacturing schedule, material availability, design revisions, accessories and delivery coordination.

Permitting, sitework, foundations and erection operate on separate schedules and should be coordinated with the material-delivery plan.

11

Can an Oklahoma metal building handle hail and severe thunderstorms?

Metal buildings can be engineered for the structural wind requirements applicable to their location, while roofing, wall-panel gauge, coatings and other product choices can influence performance and repair considerations during severe weather.

Hail performance should be evaluated based on the specific roof and wall products being considered rather than assuming every metal panel has the same impact resistance.

12

Can I customize an Oklahoma metal building?

Yes. Depending on the building system and project requirements, customization can include width and length, eave height, bay spacing, roof pitch, door placement, windows, canopies, overhangs, insulation, panel profiles, colors, wainscot, framed openings, mezzanine provisions and future expansion.

These decisions should be established before final engineering whenever possible.

13

Can my Oklahoma metal building be expanded later?

Often, yes. Future expansion should be discussed during initial design so the structural system, endwalls, orientation and site layout can account for the intended growth direction.
Planning for expansion before fabrication generally creates more options than modifying a building that was not originally designed to grow.

14

What types of metal buildings does SteelCo supply in Oklahoma?

SteelCo supplies Oklahoma metal buildings for applications including warehouses, industrial facilities, manufacturing buildings, agricultural buildings, commercial facilities, small-bay industrial and flex space, self-storage, aircraft hangars, cold storage, garages and workshops, recreational buildings, horse arenas, boat and RV storage, metal building kits, cold-formed steel buildings and specialty PEMB applications.
