Client-First

A metal building project involves much more than choosing width and length. Customers need to understand what the package includes and excludes, what information engineering requires, how location affects design, which choices affect price, what must happen before delivery, how openings affect the frame, what insulation makes sense, how future expansion should be handled, and whether they need only the building package or complete construction services. SteelCo's role is to help make those decisions clearer before fabrication.

City of Alabama
01 Birmingham & Central Alabama

Birmingham’s regional position and interstate access support warehousing, distribution, manufacturing, commercial operations and industrial services. Common metal-building applications include warehouses, manufacturing facilities, distribution buildings, contractor facilities, small-bay industrial, commercial buildings, equipment storage, automotive facilities and flex space. For warehouse and industrial projects, early design decisions often revolve around clear height, dock positions, drive-in doors, equipment, truck circulation and future expansion.

02 Huntsville & North Alabama

Huntsville and North Alabama have become major centers for aerospace, defense, advanced manufacturing, engineering and technology. Relevant metal-building applications include manufacturing, supplier facilities, aerospace support, warehouses, research-support facilities, flex industrial, equipment storage, aviation buildings and aircraft hangars. Building requirements may include larger clear spans, production areas, equipment clearance, office/warehouse combinations and future expansion.

03 Mobile & the Alabama Gulf Coast

Mobile combines port activity, logistics, shipbuilding, aerospace, manufacturing and commercial development. Metal-building applications can include warehousing, distribution, manufacturing, port-support facilities, aviation, cold storage, commercial buildings, boat storage and contractor facilities. Coastal wind, environmental exposure and potential flood-related requirements make early site-specific planning particularly important.

04 Montgomery & Central/South Alabama

Montgomery’s location within Central Alabama supports commercial, governmental, distribution, manufacturing and business-service activity. Metal buildings in this market can support commercial facilities, warehouses, distribution, automotive operations, contractor facilities, flex space, equipment storage and light manufacturing. Building systems can incorporate office and showroom space alongside warehouse or service areas within one structural shell.

05 Rural Alabama

Outside the state’s larger metros, agriculture remains an important driver of metal-building demand. Alabama has approximately 37,000 farm operations occupying about 8.6 million acres, making agricultural facilities an important part of the state’s building market.
For these customers, practical building requirements often center on equipment access, storage capacity, clear spans, ventilation, durability and future expansion.

Metal Buildings Engineered for Alabama Conditions

One Alabama metal building specification does not work for every project in the state. A facility near the Gulf Coast can face different structural and environmental considerations than a warehouse in Birmingham, manufacturing facility near Huntsville or agricultural building farther inland.

Important project inputs can include the project city, county and ZIP code, building use and occupancy, width, length and eave height, clear-span requirements, design wind speed, exposure category, building risk category, roof uplift, component and cladding pressures, roof and collateral loads, seismic criteria, door and framed-opening locations, coastal exposure where applicable, insulation requirements, future expansion plans and local code requirements.
SteelCo coordinates PEMB engineering with trusted engineering and manufacturing partners so the building package reflects the structural criteria established for the actual Alabama project. The result is a custom building system, not the same stock frame shipped to every ZIP code.

Gulf Coast Wind, Severe Weather & Tornadoes in Alabama

Severe weather is a legitimate design consideration for Alabama metal-building owners. According to the National Weather Service Alabama Tornado Database, Alabama’s most recent 10-year statewide average is approximately 60 tornadoes per year. Alabama’s tornado exposure is often associated with Dixie Alley, a commonly used meteorological term for the tornado-prone southeastern United States.

There is an important distinction when discussing building design: Dixie Alley is a severe-weather and climatology term, not a separate structural load category or standard “tornado bracing” specification for metal buildings. Likewise, a metal building engineered to meet applicable Alabama wind requirements is not automatically a tornado shelter, hurricane shelter or “tornado-proof” structure.
For ordinary commercial, industrial and agricultural projects, structural engineering considers applicable criteria such as basic design wind speed, building risk category, exposure category, building height and geometry, roof uplift, wall pressures, structural connections, bracing, large framed openings and component and cladding pressures. Where specialized tornado-load requirements apply because of building use, risk category or adopted structural standards, the project’s engineer and authority having jurisdiction determine those requirements.
If a project needs an actual storm shelter or safe room, that should be identified separately at the beginning of planning so the appropriate standards and professionals can be incorporated.

Alabama Gulf Coast Metal Building Considerations

Mobile, Baldwin County and other coastal Alabama locations introduce another set of project considerations. Buildings closer to the Gulf may be subject to different wind and exposure conditions than otherwise similar buildings farther inland.
For coastal Alabama metal buildings, project teams may need to evaluate design wind speed, exposure category, roof uplift, wall pressures, component and cladding pressures, large door openings, exterior panels and coatings, fastener compatibility, trim and accessories, finish warranties, salt-air exposure, insulation, condensation control, floodplain conditions, site drainage and elevation requirements where applicable.
There is no universal “coastal Alabama package” or single coating that automatically applies to every building near the Gulf. The correct structural and building-envelope choices depend on the actual location, intended use, exposure, manufacturer requirements and applicable codes.

Building Codes & Permitting for Alabama Metal Buildings

Alabama differs from states with one uniform statewide commercial plan-review process. Municipalities and counties can adopt and administer building codes within their jurisdictions, so a commercial project inside Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile or another municipality may follow a different permitting and review process than a project in an unincorporated area. Certain buildings and publicly funded projects can also fall under state-level jurisdiction.
That makes the project’s authority having jurisdiction an important question to establish early.
For a typical SteelCo materials-only project, the owner, contractor or project design team generally handles permit applications, zoning, civil engineering, site plans, geotechnical work, foundation coordination, floodplain requirements where applicable, local inspections and other jurisdiction-specific approvals. SteelCo provides the engineering documentation associated with the quoted PEMB package.
For qualifying Alabama commercial projects where SCB Construction Group serves as general contractor, permitting and broader project coordination may instead be incorporated into the contracted construction scope.

Planning a South Carolina Metal Building

A useful quote starts with useful project information. Before requesting pricing, it helps to know the South Carolina project city, county or ZIP code, intended building use, approximate width and length, eave or clear height, clear-span requirements, door sizes and locations, dock requirements, roof and wall preferences, insulation requirements, and whether the site is coastal or inland.

It also helps to identify the desired project schedule, current land or site status, whether plans already exist, whether you already have a contractor, and whether you need materials only, erection resources or complete commercial construction.

You do not need every detail finalized before contacting SteelCo. Helping determine what information is still needed is part of the process.

Insulation, Heat & Condensation Control in Alabama

Alabama’s warm, humid climate makes the building envelope an important part of project planning. An unconditioned equipment building, livestock structure, climate-controlled warehouse and commercial showroom can require very different approaches.

Depending on use, owners may need to consider roof and wall insulation, vapor retarders, condensation control, air sealing, ventilation, thermal bridging, interior liner systems, cooling requirements and occupant comfort. The insulation package should therefore be selected according to the building’s actual use rather than treated as a generic add-on.

Planning for Future Expansion

PEMB systems can often accommodate future growth when expansion is considered during the original design. Early planning should address which direction the building could expand, whether an endwall should be planned for future growth, whether additional warehouse bays may be needed, how production equipment could change, whether the site leaves sufficient room, whether truck circulation will still work, and whether drainage and utilities are positioned appropriately.
Mention future phases during initial discussions so they can be considered before engineering and fabrication.

Choose the Level of Support Your Alabama Project Needs

SteelCo and SCB Construction Group serve two distinct but complementary roles.

SteelCo Buildings: Custom Metal Building Package

SteelCo Buildings is the nationwide PEMB/material supplier. If you already have a contractor or plan to manage construction locally, SteelCo can provide the engineered metal building package and coordinate building requirements, PEMB engineering, manufacturing, structural framing, roof and wall materials, accessories included in the quote, building documentation and delivery to your Alabama project site. Your Alabama contractor then handles the broader construction scope, including sitework, foundations, erection and trade coordination.

SCB Construction Group: Complete Commercial Construction

For qualifying commercial projects in Alabama, SCB Construction Group can take the project beyond the metal building package. Current capabilities include preconstruction, design-build, design-assist, design-bid-build, general contracting, construction management, site and trade coordination, and complete commercial project delivery within the contracted scope.

This distinction gives Alabama customers flexibility. You can purchase a SteelCo PEMB package and use your own construction team or, for the right commercial project, work with SCB Construction Group for a more complete construction solution.
Erection Resources

SteelCo also maintains relationships with erectors and can help identify potential erection resources depending on project location, building requirements and availability. Erection availability and scope should be confirmed during quoting.

Design Around the Equipment, Not a Generic Barn Size

Agricultural building planning should begin with what needs to move through and operate inside the structure. That may include tractors, combines, round balers, feed trucks, trailers, implements and material-handling equipment. Clear spans, eave height and door openings can be configured around that equipment.
If the building may grow later, future expansion should be considered before engineering begins.

In 2022 we purchased a red iron 30’ x 50‘ building from SteelCo Buildings. We worked with Clint to procure the contract and package cost. He was great to work with and had answers to all of our questions pertaining to additional features and recommendations. His information was useful in maintaining our cost allowances. Following the purchase of the building, we worked more closely with Brad on the changes we had decided on after the purchase. Brad worked very closely with us on cost changes. He was instrumental in working closely with the manufacturer to expedite the building changes without impacting outside peripheral cost changes. Clint was very helpful in securing contractors to perform various subcontract activities such as concrete foundation and building erection. We are very happy with the building and feel we got our moneys worth and appreciate the efforts from both Clint and Brad on achieving our goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Alabama Metal Buildings

01

How common are tornadoes in Alabama?

Alabama experiences significant tornado activity. The National Weather Service Alabama Tornado Database currently reports a 10-year statewide average of approximately 60 tornadoes per year.

That severe-weather exposure makes structural design important, but it does not mean every Alabama metal building receives a generic “tornado-rated” frame. Buildings are engineered according to the applicable structural requirements for their location, use, dimensions and risk category.

02

Are Alabama metal buildings designed for hurricanes and tornadoes?

Metal buildings are engineered according to the structural criteria applicable to the project, including wind requirements based on factors such as location, building characteristics, exposure and risk category.

A standard metal building should not automatically be described as hurricane-proof or tornado-proof. If a project requires a storm shelter, safe room or other enhanced protection, that requirement should be identified separately during project planning.

03

Does a metal building near Mobile need different engineering than one farther inland?

Potentially, yes. Coastal Alabama can have different wind, exposure and environmental considerations than many inland locations. The appropriate criteria are determined from the actual project location and applicable requirements rather than using one Alabama-wide building specification.

04

Who determines the building code for my Alabama project?

It depends on the project and jurisdiction. Alabama permits municipalities and counties to administer building-code requirements, and certain project types can also fall under state agencies.

The authority having jurisdiction should therefore be confirmed for the actual project location before final engineering and permitting.

05

Does SteelCo pull my Alabama permit?

For a materials-only SteelCo project, the owner, contractor or project team typically handles permit applications and other local approvals. SteelCo provides engineering documentation associated with the PEMB package.

For qualifying projects where SCB Construction Group serves as general contractor, permitting may instead be included within the contracted construction scope.

06

Does SteelCo provide stamped engineering drawings?

SteelCo building packages can include stamped engineered drawings appropriate to the quoted building and project requirements. Foundation-plan options may also be available depending on project scope.

Civil, geotechnical, site-specific foundation and other engineering disciplines may require separate professionals.

07

Do agricultural buildings require permits in Alabama?

Requirements vary by jurisdiction, building use and project circumstances. Do not assume an agricultural building is automatically exempt simply because it is located outside municipal limits.

The owner or project team should confirm applicable zoning, building-code and permit requirements with the authority having jurisdiction before construction.

08

What is the difference between SteelCo Buildings and SCB Construction Group?

SteelCo Buildings supplies custom pre-engineered metal building packages nationwide. SteelCo helps define building requirements, coordinates PEMB engineering and manufacturing, and delivers the building package to the project site.

SCB Construction Group provides complete commercial construction services for qualifying projects in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and South Carolina.

In Alabama, that means you can choose between a PEMB package only, where you purchase the custom SteelCo building system and use your own contractor, or complete commercial construction, where you work with SCB Construction Group on a qualifying project requiring broader preconstruction, general contracting, design-build or construction-management services.

09

Can SteelCo handle my complete Alabama construction project?

SteelCo Buildings itself primarily supplies the custom PEMB package. For qualifying commercial Alabama projects, sibling division SCB Construction Group can provide complete commercial construction services. This separation keeps the scope clear: SteelCo provides the building system, while SCB Construction Group can serve as the commercial construction partner when the project qualifies.

10

Can I buy only an Alabama metal building kit?

Yes. Customers with their own contractor or erection crew can purchase a custom-engineered SteelCo metal building package without complete general contracting services. The package is configured around the project’s dimensions, location, use and selected options rather than being limited to a generic stock building.

11

How much does a metal building cost in Alabama?

There is no single reliable Alabama metal-building cost per square foot. Important cost drivers include building dimensions, eave height, clear-span requirements, project location, structural design criteria, roof and wall systems, insulation, framed openings, doors, accessories, architectural finishes, engineering requirements, freight, erection and overall construction scope.
Coastal and inland buildings with identical dimensions may therefore have different package costs.

12

How long does it take to get an Alabama metal building?

Timing varies by project and can depend on building complexity, engineering, drawing approvals, manufacturing schedules, material availability, revisions, accessories and delivery coordination. Sitework, permitting, foundations and erection follow separate schedules and should be coordinated with anticipated material delivery.

13

Can Alabama metal buildings be designed for future expansion?

Often, yes. Future expansion should be discussed during initial planning so framing, endwall conditions, building orientation and site layout can account for the intended direction of growth.
Planning for expansion before fabrication generally gives the owner more flexibility later.

14

What types of metal buildings does SteelCo supply in Alabama?

SteelCo supplies Alabama metal buildings for applications including agricultural buildings, warehouses, industrial facilities, manufacturing buildings, commercial buildings, small-bay industrial and flex space, self-storage, aircraft hangars, cold storage, garages and workshops, recreational facilities, horse arenas, boat and marina storage, metal building kits, cold-formed steel systems and specialty PEMB applications.
